The handsome figure of Waldemar Bastos has been a prominent feature of Angola’s exiled community of musicians ever since he found refuge from war in Portugal in 1982. Born in 1954 in N’Banza, on the frontier dividing Congo and Angola, Bastos is very much a border artist, culling sounds, instruments and rhythms from the four corners of the globe. The 42-year-long conflict in his homeland brought a melancholic streak to his music, after he suffered imprisonment and the death of his son Walter.
